About Us

 Our Philosophy

Since 1949, the First Congregational Church of Western Springs Preschool has successfully fostered a love of learning in young children.

Our curriculum is strongly based on active participation, and our mission is simple:  to advance a young child’s independence and positive self-concept, setting the stage for a lifetime of successful learning.

At the First Congregational Church of Western Springs Preschool we believe:

~To develop academic confidence we must focus on the whole child:  intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

~Children at play are actively involved in creating themes, exploring and establishing environments, solving  problems, and developing shared understandings.

~When engaged in play-based learning, young children see others’ points of view, learn to use language in new ways, learn to interact with others, and develop their muscles and coordination.

~Active involvement from parents is critical to the success of our program, and we encourage parents to partner with our teachers to facilitate the learning process.

Meet the Team

 Program Highlights

Porch Visits

In late summer— before the school year begins—our preschool teachers visit each child’s home. This visit provides a wonderful opportunity for children to meet their new teachers in a familiar setting, and allows the teachers to get better acquainted with their new students and parents before classes begin.

Moms’ Potluck Dinners

In October, preschool moms are invited to an evening gathering with other moms from the age group. These casual get-togethers provide a relaxed opportunity for the mothers to get to know their children’s teachers and each other.

Holiday Workshop

In December, our Preschool Committee hosts a festive Saturday morning event for kids to bring dad, grandpa or a special someone to help make a special Christmas gift for Mom.

Sing-Alongs

Families and friends are invited to several musical concerts throughout the school year. Our final Sing-Along is held in conjunction with our Annual Art Fair.

Nurse Jean

We are blessed with the educational opportunities and insights shared by our on-site Faith Community Nurse, Jean Larson.  Jean is often seen in our classrooms educating our students on the importance of washing hands, taking care of their health, and staying strong and active.

Field Trips

The preschool takes full advantage of the many learning opportunities outside of a typical classroom setting offered by our community.  If you are driving through Western Springs, you are likely to find a group of our students visiting the local bank, Post Office, fruit store, library, and fire station.  In addition, children delight in their trips to Fullersburg Woods, the pumpkin stand, Brookfield Zoo, and other places of interest.

There are many preschool choices in and around Western Springs. However, the First Congo Preschool is a special place. Not only do children learn academics, how to follow rules, and manners, they also start to discover what their curious minds and strong bodies are capable of. Everything from the art projects, to the various theme weeks is terrific. I love how the teachers recognize each child’s strengths, and really encourage them to grow in a loving, nurturing environment. My children and I will always have special memories of the preschool and teachers at First Congo
